Adapted Tai Chi for continuing care

As  a professional in the continuing care industry, you understand that prolonged inactivity can lead to deteriorating health which reduces the quality of life for your residents, and increases demands upon care personnel.
In 1994, Keith Roost launched an experiment which promised a partial solution: Norfolk's first Adapted Tai Chi class for people with disabilities.

Tai Chi: Controlled, rhythmic movements, deep breathing, visualisation.
Run in partnership with Norfolk Social Services, that first class in the Vauxhall Centre, taught him the difficulties of adapting Tai Chi for people with a wide range of abilities and difficulties, more importantly it also amply demonstrated the rewards: increased stamina, improved respiration and, perhaps most importantly, a greater sense of self esteem.
increased stamina, improved respiration, and,  a greater sense of self esteem.

The practice of Tai Chi incorporates controlled, slow rhythmic movements, with deep breathing and visualisation,  it has a low entry level, making it suitable for people with compromised levels of health and fitness. Our adapted Tai Chi can be performed seated.

Since that first class, we have gone on to work with hospitals, schools, care organisations, community groups and individuals, in this country, and in Portugal.
Tai Chi is now seen as a beneficial and enjoyable option for continuing care communities throughout the world.
  • Studies indicate Tai Chi helps to improve or preserve cognitive function and may inhibit the progression of age related memory dysfunction.  Link to study extract
  • A similar study concludes Tai Chi has a beneficial psychosocial effect on nursing home residents. Link to study extract.
  • Other studies indicateTai Chi is beneficial in falls prevention, improving strength and mobility, reducing stress and much more.
  •  Enjoyable and beneficial for both residents and staff.
  • The Golden Rooster Adapted Tai Chi Syllabus has been specifically designed to be delivered as Seated Tai Chi and Qigong, for  care home residents, and day centre attendees.
  • Suitable for those with restrictive movement. Allowing residents that perhaps would not normally attend an exercise class to also enjoy the experience.
  • Our fun classes include music and last up to 40 minutes.
  • We also offer a falls prevention program

The Adapted Tai Chi program from The Golden Rooster School offers all these benefits and more.  We all enjoyed those early classes, they were multi dimensional and fun. You can read about it on this link (an old article with some mistakes but it conveys the flavour)  and there is a blog article here.

If you would like to talk to us about the Adapted Tai Chi program, or arrange a demonstration for your home, please contact us via email or telephone.
